This was the first song I ever heard by Eric Whitacre. I sang it in my high school choir and I was so struck by the beauty of it that I broke down in tears afterwards.
I will always dedicate this to 2 amazing former music professors. Dr. Craig Fuchs (rest so beautifully well Sir!) & Dr. Susan Marchant of Pittsburg State University in Kansas. So very blessed to have performed this work under their direction in ensembles.
My introduction to this was by my U.S. History teacher who told us to close our eyes and come up with a story of what we saw in our minds as we listened to this. I remember seeing the lights and painting this picture in my mind and translating it into words that I still didn't understand what it was.
Singing this as a soprano 1, while singing that beautiful faraway, siren high note at the beginning, was a honorable experience. I will never forget it.
We listened to this track for the first time in my chamber singers choir today, we haven't learned the piece yet but god, this is beautiful. I was fully entranced listening to it, I can't wait to learn this and perform it Edit 5/31/23: We actually didn't end up singing this when it was in season, lmao. We were supposed to sing this during our January concerts. Instead, we sang it during our Spring concert; and the audience LOVED it. My first performance was yesterday and I have another one coming up on Friday. I'm so excited about finally performing this beautiful piece.
Music that fills the air, truly like heavy gold. Im grateful to have experienced Lux Aurumque and Water Night not only as a listener, but also as part of a passionate choir. It pulls the soul right out of one's body!
I’ll tell you how I got into choral music .. I had too much wine and fell against my daughters glass cupboard . It’s old, like 1920 and the glass smashed in 3 panes. I couldn’t sleep and laid in bed searching for someone who could replace the glass to look original. I was distraught and found one at last and booked the gentleman - then I put on random music and a choral peice came on. It was so relaxing - so comforting - so serene .. and I just floated out of my tension and stress. I’ve loved choral music ever since ! ( and yes, the gentleman replaced the broken glass so well you literally cannot see the damage ) xxx
I got to sing this with a combination of 8 student choirs, situated around a whole church on upper balconies. One of the most magical moments in my decade of singing in choirs. Remembering that moment helps calm me down in any situation.
